In our conversation we covered an array of topics including the power of video in our personal and professional lives, how we should think about the value of money and how to overcome issues of being judged on camera.
Here are some of the highlights from our discussion:
Mindset is a much bigger challenge than toolset. It’s the ability to put yourself out there – being able to put yourself out there and not feel embarrassed is a superpower. The thing about video is that we’re often scared that the whole world is going to see us and laugh at us. One way to overcome this is to start by making a video for one person – a friend for instance. If you just send a 10 second video to your friend it’s discrete and each time you do that you are building confidence and learning. The more you do this you'll improve.
Video is a powerful way to demonstrate and show interest and expertise in the area that you want to be doing rather than what you are currently doing. If you just start sharing videos on topics you're interested in, you can show your expertise and demonstrate your interests to people who otherwise may have been oblivious to these skills.
Creating a personal board of directors amongst your friends can reap a plethora of rewards. If you’re the CEO of a company, there’s always a group of people who will help you solve the companies problems. A similar model can be created amongst a group of friends – every few months you get together and each person reports on what they are dealing or struggling with. This framework makes it really easy to ask for help and hardwires your whole group towards helping one another.
When we’re procrastinating over starting a project, the simple solution is – you can talk about it or you can do it. Even doing things poorly will get you further faster.
Don’t trust your feelings on knowing who is ‘the one’. The human heart is not one dimensional and so we have to go figure out the thing that speaks to us specifically. We might share our preferences based on a movie or a book but we have to go find what works for us.
